There are lots of companies on the web that sell website templates for people to download, alter and then publish as their own. If you don't have a lot of experience designing websites, they can seem like a great idea to help get yourself on the web and in front of (potentially) millions of people.
We know a fair bit about website templates - we offer them to customers who want to build their own websites using our CMS tool. But how good are they? Well, it really depends what you want from your design project.
Benefits of a Website Template can be vast - but the most common use of website templates are because either the user has time constraints and/or has a lack of coding knowledge to build a website from the ground up. There's no shame in either of those points - everyone's busy these days and websites can be extremely complex.
With a website theme | template, the main structure has already been built for you and all you need to do is fill in the gaps. Simply add your logo, your text and pictures of your products, team members or services. It's normally a quick and easy process, especially if the theme | template you've purchased is compatible with a decent CMS (Content Management System - editing software). Our self-build website clients love the website templates we offer - they're modern, sleek and really easy to use.
Website themes and templates can be restrictive though. The website theme you're buying (or comes free with most Build Your Own Website Companies) will no doubt look amazing - it's what drew you to it in the first place. When the theme has been uploaded to your editing software, you'll start to make subtle - or maybe not so subtle changes to your theme to tie it in with your branding. Every change you make will draw further and further away from your initial design. What we're really trying to say here is, the theme you originally liked may transition into something completely different by the time you pull it apart and put it back together again. Unlike other web development companies (or freelance web developers), we can help you adapt your template!
HTML, CSS and JS will certainly be required to adapt your theme to tie in with your adaptations. Whether this is an advanced or basic knowledge of coding will largely depend on what you want to accomplish, but be prepared to have at least a basic knowledge to tackle the problems you will almost certainly come up against. If you're looking for something a little more bespoke though - why not give our team a call?!
Remember, your website is often going to be the first port of call when researching your company - make a great first impression!
